Gender & Diversity
Diversity, inclusion and effectiveness are core values for us at Nia. We believe companies that embrace a diverse leadership and workforce are likely to be more innovative and thus well positioned to financially outperform their counterparts with all male leadership.
Investing with a Gender Lens
At Nia, we value both diversity and inclusion in the workforce. We also know from the research we study that, generally, companies with more women serving on the board of directors, and at the executive level have been found to generate higher financial returns than those who do not include women. We also understand that companies with women in leadership tend to hire more female employees.
While we value and actively advocate for broad-based diversity, gender is something we can measure—and gender inclusion can at times serve as a proxy for other important types of diversity.
At Nia, we incorporate a gender lens into our portfolios and everything we do. As a women led team, when we say we use a gender lens—what do we mean? Yes, we require that all Nia companies include women in leadership. These criteria alone actually exclude more than 50% of the companies we research. We view a demonstration of inclusion to be an essential first step and bottom line criteria for us. Though at Nia our gender lens reaches deeper. We go beyond leadership teams to the very reason for being of each of our portfolio companies. All Nia holdings are actively working on innovative products and services important for a sustainable world that embraces women and girls. From addressing women's health care, to supporting women-led businesses, to providing clean energy solutions and clean air, Nia portfolio companies are contributing to a better world for women and girls.
Working with a Gender Lens
Within our own women-led and women-owned company, we are working to change the face of finance in small and big ways. We do local outreach to high school aged girls via the feminist clubs, helping young women "put their feminism into their finances."
Our society has built a narrow view of what business leaders look like. At Nia, we are out to expand that view as we help lead the way in sustainable finance.
We are proud of our internship program for high school girls and college-aged young women. We train them in ways of running a purpose-driven, values-based company and teach them practices of sustainable finance. Through our program, we are empowering young ethically-minded investors as well as helping achieve our broader goal of changing the face of finance.
Our passion for transforming finance is baked into our company culture and is demonstrated in a poem written by our team member Erika Andraca, titled "Changing the Face of Finance," featured here.
Do check out our Money doula blog for short educational pieces working to empower women in their financial journeys.
